Fire Damage…Should It Worry You?

Unless it is brand new, any house you buy will come with a history. It could be that the property has been previously damaged in a fire, but if the house looks in good shape now, should that even bother you? Let’s discuss the answer to that question:

Naturally, you want the home you buy to be a good investment. That is why you should not just make your decision at face value. For example, depending on how quickly and thoroughly the damage was treated after the fire, a house could experience many problems for years to come. Smoke damage is another concern. Even if the fire was relatively small and contained, the smoke from it can fill the entire building. Just like fire, if not cleaned up quickly smoke can leave behind many toxic substances that will linger for many years.

It is not just fire and smoke that can cause problems for the home. Water damage is another major cause of long-term issues. Firefighters do not usually skimp on the water when trying to put out a fire, which can sometimes cause more damage than the fire itself. Again, if it is not treated correctly, issues such as mold or other moisture-related problems can affect the house for years to come.

If you are thinking about buying a house that has some history of fire damage, make sure you have it thoroughly inspected before finalizing the deal. A comprehensive home inspection will help you find out if the house is hiding any nasty problems you need to be aware of.
