Low-Cost Ways to Cool Your Home

As the cost of living becomes higher and higher, we may see the need to look at ways to cut down on household expenses. Let’s look at one household expense that can be substantial during the hot summer months – air conditioning. Are there any alternatives to keeping the house cooler for less money?

Perhaps one of the easiest and cheapest ways to cool the home by a few degrees is to keep curtains and blinds closed during the day on the south and west-facing windows. Also, try to turn off appliances and lights when they are not being used, this may seem like an insignificant way to cool the home, but you will be surprised how much heat these things give off.
If it is much cooler during the night-time and evening hours, this would be a good time to keep your windows open as it will allow the house to cool down overnight.

Ceiling fans can be a very effective way to cool the home as they help to keep air circulating. Fitting awnings above windows and doors that get a lot of sun is another great way to prevent too much heat from entering the home. While these two options do have an initial cost to buy and install, the long-term benefits will be clearly evident.

Lastly, if you are planning to live in your home for years to come, you may want to consider landscape shading. This is a method that uses strategically planted trees and shrubs to shade the house at the exact time it is needed.
