Using Electrical Power Strips Safely

In the modern times we live in, electrical outlets are one of the most important amenities in our homes. However, one problem often found in older homes is that do not have enough outlets to meet the demands of today’s technology, making it necessary to use electrical power strips. But while power strips are a convenient solution to the problem of not having enough outlets, it is important to keep safety in mind. Here are a few safety suggestions:

Only use power strips temporarily. They are not safe to use as a permanent solution.
Do not interconnect power cords. It is a violation of OSHA and NEC regulations to interconnect power cords, even if they have a surge protector.

Make sure metal prongs are not showing. Metal prongs that are showing can be hazardous and should be avoided when using an electrical power strip.

Keep power cords from overheating. Power cords can overheat, and it is important to keep them from becoming too hot to the touch.

Avoid using old power cords, even if they still work. If an old power cord has uncovered wires and burn marks, it is not safe to use and should be discarded.

As mentioned, electrical power strips are a great solution when you need to plug in multiple devices and have limited outlets. However, it is important to use them safely and be aware of the risks associated with their use. By following the above suggestions, you can use power strips safely and avoid fire and safety hazards.
